Financial decision-making

Project
EMERGENCE - Pushing back the cognitive boundaries of complexity through interactive and adaptive simulation

Summary
The project addresses the global challenge of dealing with complexity in financial decision-making. Researchers from Université Laval are teaming up with Mouvement Desjardins and Boréalys Games to understand better the role of non-technical skills, cognitive limitations and biases in financial decision-making. We wish to design an adaptive and interactive learning environment (ILE) - EMERGENCE - to develop skills and strategies as an educational tool to improve decision-making among the general population, regardless of financial literacy level. At the crossroads of cognitive science, artificial intelligence (AI), adaptive technologies, and educational technologies (EdTech), the project aims to push back the cognitive boundaries of complexity through interactive and adaptive simulation. Facilitating the development of financial self-sustainability is a top strategic focus for Mouvement Desjardins. Boréalys Games is a successful startup strategically positioning itself as a key player in creating empowering educational games and is committed to offering a better experience through adaptive interactivity. The outcomes of the project shall provide 1) theoretical knowledge on cognitive limitations when faced with complex and dynamic decision-making environments; 2) new guidelines for the design of skill-based educational tools and content that take into account the challenge of dealing with complexity; 3) insight into the development of adaptive Edtech and a proof-of-concept for EMERGENCE.
