Sylvain Comtois

Research associate

Sylvain graduated from École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1990, and received his PhD from Université Laval in 1998. He has built a rich research career since his beginnings in 1998 at the Laboratory of Vision and Digital Systems at Laval University. His background in electronics and computer science laid the foundation for his work focused on robotic systems, particularly those manipulating cameras and performing 3D scans.

His significant interest in healthcare led him to contribute to innovative research projects, such as the development of a device that allows doctors to practice prostate cancer surgery. In the field of robotics, he participated in the creation of a robotic floor and a cable mechanism for shows.

Sylvain is an expert in vision, working on camera systems for identifying individuals in secure buildings and preventing lumbar injuries. He also explored virtual reality by designing a virtual military command center and leading various projects in robot teleoperation, overlaying 3D information on real objects, and creating virtual environments for the rehabilitation of patients with brain injuries.

Currently, he serves the LVSN, CIRRIS, and Co-Dot laboratories, continuing to innovate and push the boundaries of research in vision and virtual reality.
